Hill Country Chicken just opened today. I passed by during lunch and there was too much of a line for me. I figured I’d come back later. First after work, I went with Todd and his friend to Blood Manor haunted house’s dress rehearsal, courtesy of Michael Impollonia. I think he plays the butcher or chef. It was pretty scary and a lot of fun …and there’s 3D! Not quite like Avatar, but just as terrifying. By the way, here’s a $5 discount promo code if you order tickets online: “EN542” —BloodManor.com

Afterward we headed over to Hill Country Chicken. Fortunately, it opens until 11pm. Unfortunately, they were out of a lot of things. But thighs and wings are good enough for me. The staff was super nice and accommodating. They let me try a huge sample of the chicken salad. Very good.

The fried chicken was great. Different from any fried chicken I’ve had before. The breading was heavily seasoned …sorta like a more intense crunchy fried version of Shake ‘N Bake. The meat was moist. The thigh was large. I thought they gave me a breast. I think the chicken had so much flavor that the bit of liver on the thigh was underwhelming and I usually look forward to that part. It was nice they had Fried Chicken seasoning on the side to shake on. Seemed like a salt and Cajun mixture.

Other thoughts: The biscuit and Carrot & Raisin Slaw was just okay. My hands and mouth were a greasy mess. I heard there were arcade games in the basement. Overall the food is pricey. It’s no $1.89 for two pieces and a biscuit at Popeyes. But this chicken is a different beast.

Here’s a video from the Thrillist where they show how they deep fry the chickens. That machine is heavy duty.

Kwan and I walked in about 2 hrs after it opened up; sadly, we were coming from a pretty filling lunch, so we couldn’t try it out. Can’t wait to hit that shit… if thighs and wings (the best!) are what other people don’t want, this is going to work out great for late-night chicken runs 😀

I’ve never been able to afford the food at Hill Country Barbecue Market (I always pass it on my way to school) so this is right up my alley. First things first, How big are the thighs? If I’m trying to stretch my 10 bucks for lunch, is a 1 piece thigh with some fries going to fill me up? Are the portions generous? Also, how were the pies? Sorry for the 50 questions, but this place opened near my school and I’ve been looking for a decent Fried Chicken place for a while.

I suppose it depends on how much you eat. I think most people would eat two pieces of chicken and a side for a meal. That’s still under $10.
Hill Country Chicken is pricey for fried chicken. $5.50 for one breast? But I say go for it. Live now and eat what you want to eat. There’s Top Ramen tomorrow if you have to.

      Haven’t had the pies.

Yeah I do agree that it’s pricey, the most horrific thing on their menu being the 27 dollars for an 8 piece set. Still though, all the hype is making me curious to see how good it is or how it compares to other Fried Chicken joints like Brother Jimmys on W 31st. How bad is the line? Is it like Shake Shack on 23rd? Just wondering cause I have to catch a bus after I get my food.

Line is pretty long during lunch at the moment. Not like Shake Shack lines though. If you go before noon or after 2 or 3pm, it probably won’t be bad.
