American singer-songwriter, David Dondero, is reporting in his meals from his current tour. He’s living my dream of playing music and eating on the road. Here is the Dixie Grill in Wilmington, NC.
“When I go to Wilmington, NC the first thing I think about is waking up the next morning and getting the Steak and Eggs at the Dixie Grill. By far the best I’ve ever had. The simple dish taken to the highest level. They serve up a substantial chunk of marinated beef shoulder tenderloin. Not the usual thin cut like so many other breakfast joints. They don’t skimp with the steak.. they go all out and at a fair price. $7.95.. You get 2 eggs, steak, grits or homefries and toast. I usually get the steak rare with the eggs over easy.
I always get the grits as well. They are a special form of grits like none other I’ve ever had…. The grittiest of grits. The “true grits†. â€. The grits are from Adleh Hills in South Carolina. A mixture of yellow and white corn. Stone ground for thicker texture.. The best grits I’ve ever had. I put butter, salt and pepper on them. They are the thick larger style.. farmer style.. which are an integral part of this beautiful display of breakfast perfection.
The ice tea is essential to wash it all down. I go half sweet/half unsweet with lemon. Slightly sweet. I like it like that….served in a plastic cup that says “Coca Colaâ€.
It’s hard to finish the whole dish. With patience and time I always manage. Gotta take it easy. Take it slow. Enjoy the morning. It’s always good to be back in the South.” —dd
