Vegan Slices at Vinnie’s Pizzeria

Zzalgern0n, the guy who brought you the Cherpumple Pie-Cake video, stopped by New York on his way to shoot a doc in Africa. He’s very particular in what he eats –a vegan that doesn’t eat much vegetables. He took me late at night to Vinnie’s Pizzeria in Brooklyn, where they have vegan slices and a Tom Hanks “T.hanks” trash bin. Zzalgern0n seems think it’s a landmark …the trash bin that is.

Vinnie’s had different outrageous looking slices of vegan and non-vegan. I was tempted at the multi-colored Tortellini slice, but went with the popular (according to them) Black Bean, Avocado & Feta slice. Zzalgern0n got the vegan Buffalo Chicken and Black Bean slices and a fake ham roll. It was weird, but I liked his vegan pizza a lot more than my non-vegan one. I don’t get it. …I only get T.hanks.

Zzalg’s bro IMed the next morning and asked if I hung with the Zz. I said:
Zzalgern0n and I went to an empty bar last night
They had a dog there
He ate vegan pizza…
Zzalgern0n ate the dog
bahwhwhwhwa
…Thank you. I’ll be here all week.

Son of Sam ate at Sal’s Pizza

We were cooped up in the apartment during yesterday’s snowstorm. I heard reports of snowmen creeping up in the neighborhood. Cabin Fever starts to set in and the feeling of madness fast approaches. My roommate and I tried to escape, only to end up Sal’s Pizza on Lorimer, where “Son of Sam” David Berkowitz used to eat. The reviews on Yelp say there’s an autographed photo from Berkowitz on their wall. We only saw a photo of police officers standing in front of Sal’s in tight shorts.

Bonnie got a Grandma slice, in which I liked the cheesy crust. I picked the Pesto slice because it had a fancy leaf design. That was the best part of the pizza. Did Berkowitz eat his pizza with a pesto leaf design?

On the way back, we enountered a snowman on Metropolitan. Bonnie put a pepper in its nose. I thought it was disrespectful.

Mesa Coyoacan

I got my newest issue of Time Out and they have ceased to put Mesa Coyoacan in the “New & Approved” section after four or five issues in a row. I’m not sure if I’m the one to blame, but I’d like to think there’s power in food blogging. Now I’m not sure if I should feel good or bad if I did that, but it really was confusing. I kept thinking it was Groundhog’s Day, but that was Tuesday.

So here I am, finally dining at Mesa Coyoacan for brunch. Alyssa got the Chilaquiles with eggs. It was different than the kind at Grand Morelos, which I’m to understand is pretty authentic.  Mesa’s was much less mushy and wasn’t mashed up into the sauce. It was still a tortilla chip –a little soft from the ranchero sauce. It was closer to the kind I had in San Francisco. Bonnie’s Huevos Rancheros tasted like the Chilaquiles, since it was the same ingredients –just in a different form.

My Fish Tacos (tilapia) –three small two-bite sized tacos at $9. Pretty tasty with a squirt of lime. I’m usually in need of hot sauce on my tacos and they did bring out three homemade varieties. I tried all them, but it was best without. The tacos were plenty flavorful in each small bite.

Russ asked me what kind of place this is. I said you’d take your out-of-town guy friends to Grand Morelos. For Mesa Coyoacan, your out-of-town gal friends …or whoever you happen to wake up next to. It’s like the Sea or Planet Thai of Mexican restaurants.

M Noodle Shop’s Roast Pork Bun

I walked by this place past 4am and wondered why the hell it was still opened. Because it opens til 6am every day, that’s why. M Noodle Shop on Metropolitan is brought to you by the people behind M Shanghai on Havemeyer and is only a couple weeks old.

I got an order of steamed roast pork buns (2 for $6). A little pricy for char siu bao, but what do you expect at four in the morning in Williamsburg? I’m curious about the soy sauce and chopsticks they gave me with my pork buns. I’m curious why every drunk person walking in thought I worked there. I’m curious about the economic and social consequences behind feeding wasted kids in the middle of the night. Immigrant Chinese chefs becoming insomniacs and no one can fit into their skinny jeans anymore. I’ve been worried about my jeans.

S & B Polish Restaurant

Trouble on the L train yesterday. It was going really slow. Then finally they let us off at Bedford and told us there were no trains into Manhattan. I figured I’d stop off for a meal until the trains worked itself out.

I tried the lunch special at S & B for $7.50. Sauerkraut & Mushroom Pierogies and Split Pea Soup. Now looking at the menu, I didn’t seem to get the 2 vegetables and dessert, coffee or tea with the special. Maybe because I didn’t ask? Well I wasn’t missing it. I was too busy being impressed with the Split Pea Soup –chunky with potato, bacon, kielbasa and carrots. It was the best Split Pea Soup I’ve ever had.

Unfortunately the trains still weren’t running when I finished. Someone jumped in front of the tracks. Makes me feel weird thinking about this meal.

Family Garden’s Mongolian Beef

I’ve been craving Mongolian Beef, a dish my dad used to cook for me way back whenever I visit my parent’s Chinese restaurant in Orlando –more in my late teenage years. It was similar to pepper steak, but much more spicy and sweet. It made me really think about the combination of sweet and spicy, as well as my cousin Jose’s spaghetti (where he’d add fresh vegetables, Texas Pete’s or Red Devil style hot sauce and sugar baked over noodles). The heat feels like it’s opening up your taste buds to the sweet flavors, similar to how eating a mint can make drinking a soda feel so refreshing like a winter breeze in your mouth…they work in harmony. Sweet & spicy is a combination I’d loved to see more in dishes.

I searched Menupages for places that serve Mongolian Beef and went with the nearby Family Garden Chinese fast food, possibly hoping that was a sign with “family” in the name. Unfortunately, it didn’t live up to my expectations. Not spicy enough, not sweet enough and too salty. I’m not giving up on my search. If you have a lead on some good spicy & sweet Mongolian Beef, let me know. Thanks!
