There’s cheap $1.25 pizza slices right off the Bedford stop. The signage throws me off though. Eden Restaurant? When the gates are closed and covering up the pizza sign, you’d swear there was a pizza shop right there last night. It wasn’t just a dream, was it?
The slice is what you’d expect for dollar pizza. Not bad, not great. Cheap, quick and fills you up.

After the Gainesville class photo, a few of us went to Honeychiles’ at the Charleston bar where they used to have free pizza. Now it’s Cajun food. Reggie Watts was dead on when he tweeted, “Quote of the day-”The pizza’s all gone and some punk rock guys opened a cajun restaurant”. Cajun food is popping up everywhere in Williamsburg (Tchoup Shop at d.b.a. and Goods Food truck). Cajun is the new Bedford.
Small Jambalaya ($5), Boiled Peanuts ($3) and Roast Poblano Pepper Corn Bread with bourbon honey ($3). I was disappointed to see that the Jambalaya was plain white rice topped with the jambalaya stew, rather than it cooked all together. It seemed more like a gumbo over rice than a jambalaya. Either way, it was meaty and fantastic. The boiled peanuts were great. Tasted like there was a bit of coffee grinds added to the boil. The corn bread was also good.
There was a couple next to us going to town with the Scallop (Seafood of the Day) Po’boy and a French Fries & Gravy Po’boy. I’m not sure that French Fry sandwich looked good, but it is definitely up my alley ($5).
All in all good food while watching the out of town bands loading in their huge vans and trailers’ worth of gear. I’ve never seen so much equipment in NY. No ones gonna be able to fit down there to watch them play with all them Marshall stacks.

I think we had too many Miller Lites with the new Vortex Bottle at Sam Jayne’s show. It’s dangerous because the beer funnels out faster. We stumbled our way to Yola’s Cafe into the newly expanded side of the Mexican restaurant. I opened the menu and picked the grossest sounding dish right in the middle of the page —Beef Tongue Texan Nachos.
The chips were stale, but the big chunks of beef tongue were some of the best I’ve ever had. Very tender and the fibrous muscle peeled apart from itself so easily. It was almost like slow-cooked pulled pork. There was a lot of food and a lot of tongue there. I could only eat about a third before I got sick of it. Rusty had gone back to Good Co. bar to get his windbreaker jacket. When he got back, he forgot what I ordered. I knew I had to get food inside him like Hasselhoff, so I kept my mouth shut and told him it was just beef. I can’t tell if that makes me a good or bad friend.

…The tacos are solid if you don’t want to chance it.
I read on my friend’s Facebook that she saw Tedone Latticini in Williamsburg all gutted out and photos of the Mozzarella Lady in the window. One can only presume the worse. Luckily, I came across this post where it says she’s just retired. So I’m wondering if it’s appropriate to go back and “Like” that status or not. I mean I like the Mozzarella Lady, but not that the store’s closed, and like that she’s just retired, but not dead.
Two different friends this week told me that The Commodore in Brooklyn has the best fried chicken they’ve ever had. They ain’t kidding. I got some friends to meet there for happy hour. The fried batter was so light and mix that in with the honey butter and hot sauce …hot dang. The Hot Fish Sandwich with spicy fried fish topped with cole slaw was amazing. I gobbled it up so quick because I didn’t want to share no more.
Then we headed over to Good Company, where Sam Jayne was taping his “Hi Mom, I’m on the Sam Jayne Show” –a television variety show filmed in a bar before a live studio audience. He kills two birds with one stone by bartending and hosting a show at the same time. I took a lot of photos with my new Canon EOS T2i DSLR camera I got this afternoon. What you think? I had a difficult time with the 50mm f/1.8 lens, only because I had to be like ten feet away from the food to get it in frame. But luckily this means I can take photos of other people’s food from another table.
After, Rusty and I headed back to The Commodore to give Yasmin (my ex and ex-bandmate) a Justice of the Unicorns shirt. She made us a coconut tiki drink. Russ invited her back into the band. I wonder if that means I’m kicked out.
We ended up at Carmine’s II where we saw Carmine. I think we had too much to drink because Rusty told Carmine the same thing ten times and tried to pay twice. They got a real nice backyard there. Then back home, Rusty modeled a bunch of different Justice of the Unicorns shirts that his friend JB (American Crossroads Apparel) made for us. Not just shirts, but skirts, aprons, negligee and a karate outfit. They are badass.

I gathered my friends to check out the cajun pop-up restaurant in the back of d.b.a bar last Sunday. A great sounding menu and I’ve been craving for some New Orleans food since we were there a couple months ago.
The gumbo and cajun burger were so good, although a little on the small side. Chunks of everything in the gumbo, including pieces of shelled crab. It was perfectly spiced. I didn’t need to add anything, even though I was hoping to when I saw some of their homemade sauces. The burger was juicy and well-made. Great New Orleans food here. Better than Popeyes.

Aaron & Kristy came into town and we all went to this underground gourmet vegan dinner in a some guy’s apartment. $40 for a four course dinner …came with a bonus two courses.
I couldn’t believe how spicy it was. I’d like to think I’m a tough guy, but it certainly hit my limits of what I can handle. The watermelon with the tiny sliver of jalapeño was mind boggling spicy. I’m thinking it was because the water helped spread the heat in my mouth. I have to try this at home. Similarly, the Avocado Dumpling with Lemongrass Broth and Red Chile Garlic Paste –the liquid possibly intensified the heat. The spiciness was awesome for me. Made me sweat. I loved it. I just don’t understand how other people can deal.
I was skeptical going into dinner because it’s vegan. But if no one ever told me it was, I probably wouldn’t have noticed. Nothing trying to act like meat. Although, there was a ravioli which I thought was stuffed with ricotta cheese, but it was a cheese made out of cashew. Again, I wouldn’t have noticed. It was just good food. I was impressed how Chef Matteo is able to cook, plate and serve around twenty people at one time all by himself. And he didn’t turn his nose at me for bringing Miller High Life (BYOB) …although it is the champagne of beers.
I forgot that I stumbled by this place the other night, until I saw these photos on my camera. So the GOODS Food Truck is now open. It takes over that old yellow abandoned ice cream trailer that my friends always said they wanted to set up a fried fish shack. Instead 3RD Ward took actual initiative. I did stumble by this place a week before, when they were practicing making burgers and fries. I was quite disappointed in the menu. I expected something fancy and mind blowing like a whole roast pig from these art people.
Anyway, so I stumbled upon them Thursday night. There were a lot of people working in the truck. I looked at the menu and it everything seemed expensive and ordinary (hot dog, burger, fries). Then they told me the special of the day was Gumbo for $8.50. Alright I say! Okay, that’ll be $9.25. Oh right. Then after tip, it’s kinda a lot for a small cup of soup, but it was very meaty with chicken and sausage. I liked it. Expensive, but good. Oh, I get it. Like their name.
