Met up with our dear friend Jay at Franky & Johnny’s to revisit the boiled crawfish we had a couple years back. Last time, we had 1lb each and I was stuffed. That was my first stab at the little mudbugs and learned how to suck their heads. Down them all and I’m even allergic to shellfish (or at least I think I am).
This time we had 2lbs each for only $8.99. I couldn’t believe it. I was thinking that was the price per pound. Turns out my friends say that is actually on the high side for New Orleans. Dang, this would go for $30 in New York.
We also had Fried Gator Nuggets and Fried Soft Shell Crab, which was frickin awesome. That was the best soft shell crab I’ve ever had. With this and all the tasty crawfish critters, I’m sure in love with Franky and Johnny’s. I hope that doesn’t make me gay.
I joined the Midtown Lunch team to try everything under $10 from the Oyster Bar take-out window. Yummy meal and a good value for the quality. It was my first lunch ever in Grand Central Station. That’s one fancy food court. Next time, I’m going to stake out one of those fancy looking hard brown chairs. –read Brownie’s review on Midtownlunch
For this review, I get tomatoes thrown at me (in the comments). No one gets my eating Pizza Hut’s Big New Yorker Pizza in New York joke. Poor delivery? …get it? Pizza delivery? shit. –link
I tried out Ben’s new “Underground Lobster Pound” the other night. It’s a secret Brooklyn underground spot where you can get a lobster roll at night. Usually around 5-10pm …and after hours he can slide you a roll through the mail slot. Dang, I don’t know if I just gave away too much information. Anyway the lobster roll was really awesome. There was a lot of fresh meat on that sucker. Ben then proceeded to cook up several live lobster in front of us for future rolls and bisque (which is available tonight if you’re quick enough to find out where it is). Right now it’s close company that have access, so he doesn’t get shut down (at least so soon). You can contact him on his site Brooklyn Chowder Surfer to inquire. Don’t be shy.
I hope you guys get to try it, because it’s really good, he’s a great guy and you’re getting something homemade from a celebrity chef here –Throwdown with Bobby Flay: Chowder episode, organizer of the Brooklyn Fishing Derby, guest on Martha Stewart Living, Heritage Radio host – “Catch It, Cook It, Eat It”
$5 Fried Fish over rice special on Fridays at the halal cart on 6th Ave and 23rd St (NW corner by Citi bank). I was able to get the last one two weeks ago. He pulled out the marinating raw fish from the cooler and dropped it into its own special frying oil pot. The fish seems popular. The cabbie in front of me got one and the guy behind me tried to order it too. The fish was overcooked, but it seems promising if done right. This is my first fish from a cart. Where are the other ones?
Met up with the bros at the Long Island City piers for some fishing. It was cold and windy, so I took cover at the nearby Waterfront Crabhouse (right across the street from Water Taxi Beach). Had a Blue Moon and walked around the restaurant while I waited for my Crabcake burger to go. The place has a lot of random crap on the wall, like tricycles and traffic signs. I remember eating here with some friends a few years back and came away with the impression that this was a TGI Fridays. They do have an impressive collection of boxing memorabilia around the bar.
I wasn’t expecting much with the Crabcake burger, but it was surprisingly good. Very plump on that English muffin.
It’s Lobster Fest right now at the Crabhouse. They have daily specials. And they offer a shuttle bus to and from your office in the Long Island City area for free.
Susan recommended the new seafood restaurant, Sel de Mer, in our hood with high praise. This place has been opened for a couple months now, located on Graham Ave where the falafel place used to be. I liked that falafel place and how they used to have a photocopied letter under the glass of each table from a gentleman (and perhaps a scholar) who wanted to say thank you for the best falafel and he knows well because he is the great-grandson of one of the guys who invented Pepsi or Coke. I thought it was funny that a guy who is not famous in his own right took the time to mail a letter from far away saying how great a falafel tasted in Williamsburg Brooklyn, especially with a glass of cola. I was sad to see this place go.
Went to try brunch today at Sel de Mer. It was well understaffed. It took about twenty minutes to take our order and with only a few other tables seated. Looking over at another table, the blueberry pancakes looked amazing, but I had my mind set on seafood and locked on the fish sliders. The waitress told us the specials, which included a Whole Lobster and fries for only $16. I couldn’t believe it when I asked the price. It was too good of a deal to pass up, despite my allergy to shellfish –itchy mouth.
The lobster was bigger than I expected for the price and was tasty. It didn’t need much butter or lemon. It had its own juices, red lobster roe and the green gunk (tomalley) that gave it some flavor. I guess you’re not really supposed to eat that green gunk, but I couldn’t resist dipping my fries into it.
I tasted the Fish & Chips and Eggs Benedict with Salmon –all very good. I’m considering going back tomorrow to see if they have lobster again.

Met up with the Brooklyn Fishing Derby gang at the N.5th and Kent Pier –beautiful and hidden behind the Dubai-esque sky rise condos and construction. A good amount of folks fishing there with kids running around and hipsters sunbathing. Unfortunately they’ve just closed down this pier for the rest of October, suspiciously when the fishing derby ends. I wonder what would happen if the derby ran a few months longer.
Russ and I had a few drinks and sportsmans at the Levy afterwards. There’s a food truck called Eurotrash right next door that I’ve never seen before. It’s in a lot that looks like it’s for a junkyard, small warehouse, an apartment or apparently a recording studio? I heard some drunk girl rave about about the fish and chips and it’ll only be fitting after a day of fishing. It was really good. The fries were Belgium style frites. I’m curious about the meatballs and Bangers and Mash.
