Mother’s Tilapia Fish Sandwich

Rusty and I have been spending a lot of time at Mother’s bar lately for an after-work Gaffel or three. I always see people eat there and finally took my shot at the Tilapia  Fish Sandwich. Dang, it’s good. Maybe needs a little more of that fancy sauce, but it’s a nicely cooked & seasoned piece of fish. And yes, farm raised tilapia is bad for you …apparently worse than bacon (see this article). But I would be happy to order a bacon sandwich just as well, so I know what I’m getting into. I could really taste the delicious heart clogging oils coating the flaky clumps of fish and it was heaven …which might not be too far off eating the way I do.

The Commodore’s Hot Fish Sandwich and Fried Chicken!

Two different friends this week told me that The Commodore in Brooklyn has the best fried chicken they’ve ever had. They ain’t kidding. I got some friends to meet there for happy hour. The fried batter was so light and mix that in with the honey butter and hot sauce …hot dang. The Hot Fish Sandwich with spicy fried fish topped with cole slaw was amazing. I gobbled it up so quick because I didn’t want to share no more.

Then we headed over to Good Company, where Sam Jayne was taping his “Hi Mom, I’m on the Sam Jayne Show” –a television variety show filmed in a bar before a live studio audience. He kills two birds with one stone by bartending and hosting a show at the same time. I took a lot of photos with my new Canon EOS T2i DSLR camera The Commodores Hot Fish Sandwich and Fried Chicken! I got this afternoon. What you think? I had a difficult time with the 50mm f/1.8 lens, only because I had to be like ten feet away from the food to get it in frame. But luckily this means I can take photos of other people’s food from another table.

After, Rusty and I headed back to The Commodore to give Yasmin (my ex and ex-bandmate) a Justice of the Unicorns shirt. She made us a coconut tiki drink. Russ invited her back into the band. I wonder if that means I’m kicked out.

We ended up at Carmine’s II where we saw Carmine. I think we had too much to drink because Rusty told Carmine the same thing ten times and tried to pay twice. They got a real nice backyard there. Then back home, Rusty modeled a bunch of different Justice of the Unicorns shirts that his friend JB (American Crossroads Apparel) made for us. Not just shirts, but skirts, aprons, negligee and a karate outfit. They are badass.

Deep Fried Largemouth Bass

We started cooking up some fish as soon as we landed from our flight back from New Orleans. Rusty deep fried the Largemouth Bass, one of which I caught. It was somewhat symbolic when he dropped the fish into the oil. Perhaps oil was his fate if we caught him or not.

And no stopping Tony’s creole seasoning. I add it to everything now. Open a can of green peas and sprinkle it with love.

Redfish in Lafitte, Louisiana

We went out fishing with Captain Mike once again. Unfortunately, only 90% of the area we’d normally fish was closed due to the oil spill. On our ride out, we saw our old cabins we stayed at last time –this time, filled with tons of BP workers at the dock.

Capt Mike took us twenty miles out in the marsh lands. The two days were long and hot. We made sure to apply sunscreen generously to avoid lobster hands like last time. Russ and Sam did really well hooking the Reds. They had a blast. I can’t say the same for myself. I felt like nothing I did would make those fish bite. I was frustrated. I couldn’t will things to happen no matter how hard I tried. I felt like Tebow at the end of  the Alabama game.

I’m sure there was a lesson to be learned there. Maybe it’s that I can’t always get want I want. Or maybe I learned that there could be far worse things than complaining about being on vacation, fishing on a boat in quiet serene waters. First World problems.

In the end, it was beautiful to be out there. I caught a bass and a black drum. We cooked some redfish fresh. So good. Those pan fried filets sure made me a lover of Tony Chachere’s Creole Seasoning

Natural Tofu Korean Restaurant

We had pre-karaoke dinner at Natural Tofu. It’s interesting that there’s also BCD Tofu House on the same block. You get the usual Korean (banchan) side dishes, but the fish on the side is the some of the best I’ve had at a Korean restaurant. I believe it’s smelt and has a very fishy flavor. Much more interesting than the usual fried fishes. There’s some darker meat close to the head that shook me up with a strong oily flavor, similar to cod fish oil. I wonder if you can just order complimentary fish & side dishes, because that’s mostly what I like and just want to eat.

I ordered the Natural Tofu hot bowl + beef short ribs. The menu says you can get it “vagetarian”, but I went with the combination instead. You have to be quick and crack the egg into the hot bowl right when you get. I’m always too slow because I’m taking photos and the egg never really seems to cook. I don’t know about these tofu hot bowls (in general). It’s never as exciting or flavorful as it looks. Disappointing for being the entree. The beef short ribs were really tasty though.

Then karaoke at Duet 35. Lot’s fun. You can ask for the Jesus fish tambourine at the desk.

Banh Mi on Grand St

Met up with Sam planning to go to his favorite brunch spot, Wombat, but instead noticed a new Vietnamese sandwich and bubble tea shop across the street –conveniently named “Banh Mi”. I was surprised at how good these banh mi’s were for being a new place in Williamsburg. Their Classic (pork roll, brawn, roasted ground pork & pate $5.50) banh mi ranks up there with ones I’ve had in Chinatown. The Hanoi Catfish (catfish marinated with ginger, Vietnamese spices & dill $8) is a beautifully fried piece of fish and awesome when you get a bite with mayo sauce. Maybe that means I could’ve used more mayo sauce? Another thing is that “spicy” is not too spicy. But perhaps, my mouth is burnt out from all the Ghost Pepper sauce I’ve been eating …and they do have backup with a bottle of Sriracha cock sauce on the tables.

I liked my Taro Black Tea with Tapioca Balls and Sam’s pink Watermelon bubble tea tasted like Hello Kitty, but in a good way.

Brunch at Fanny (Brooklyn)

Brunch with Bonnie. We were craving pancakes and sat down at a place we thought would have them. They didn’t and we were sat in awkward corner in the shade on a nice sunny day. That was the first time I’ve ever walked out of a restaurant. So we went up the street to Fanny. My first time there. Bonnie got the Baked eggs over Ratatouille and I got the Fried Fish Sandwich, even thought I really wanted the ratatouille. It’s weird how no two people are allowed order the same thing. I understand why I do that, but why do other people when they don’t share in the first place? I ate both anyway and it was good.

Billy, who we ran into over at the Blue Stove bakery, says Fanny also makes a pretty respectable burger. I should try it. It was funny running into him. I walked into the bakery and stared at the pie he was carrying out and didn’t even realize it was him. That’s what happens when you become a food blogger. It’s like being distracted by boobs, but a cherry pie instead.

Friday Fish from 18th St & 6th Ave Halal Street Cart

Last week, I found another street food cart that has a Friday fish special ($5). It doesn’t look as nice as the last one I had from another halal cart, but this was better prepared/cooked. The spicy rice here was actually spicy. I was sweating balls.

Located on the South East corner of 18th St and 6th Ave. Manhattan, New York.
