Limewire’s DMFE Closing Party with DJ Andrew W.K.

Pics of last night’s Digital Music Forum East closing party, hosted by Limewire –with Andrew W.K. spinning and sets by Vivian Girls and my new favorite band, Holy Ghost Tent Revival. HGTR is like indie hillbillies doing New Orleans-style barbershop quartet touring from Greensboro. Amazing, fun, rowdy.

Coco 66 – Fries and Sir Frog

This is from our show last week with our friends, Sir Frog, at Coco66. Got some fries and chip with guacamole ($4 each). They have specials like half-price chicken or pulled pork sandwiches on Thursdays and $1 oysters at happy hour. You can order food from either Coco 66 (the bar/music room) or Coco 68 (the restaurant next door).

I wasn’t sure if it was weird that my ex-gf jumped on stage and took my mic to sing on one of our songs. At least it sounded cool.

The Cottage, Free Unlimited Wine & DragonForce

Anthony and I got $5 ticket to DragonForce at the Fillmore through Citi/Live Nation’s $5 ticket promotion. Sweet deal if the convenience fees weren’t more than the tickets. Sweeter deal at The Cottage Chinese restaurant next door to the Fillmore for free unlimited wine. They keep bringing carafes of white wine while you’re eating. The food is pretty standard Chinese-American fare. Ordered the Prawns with Young Ginger Root and Ten Ingredient Chow Fun and a wonton soup. The bill came to $25 for all that food and wine. We even had to turn down the last full carafe the waiter brought us. That’s how generous they were.

DragonForce was well worth the $5. The singer kept spitting and throwing water at the audience and then flicking them off. He had a stash of bottles to do just that. The 2nd guitarist and the bassist kept making expressions like “oh well, I guess I’m just a bad little boy.” Herman Li couldn’t stop playing fast and had a sweet move where he made his guitar squeal and picked up it by the tremolo bar, then slammed it against his hip. The drummer was put in the corner, maybe because his double bass action would steal the show. And the keyboardist played keyboards that sounded like a guitar. I think they played their hit song five times or maybe it all sounds like it.

Matt’s B-day / Mulholland’s / Campfunk Glam Party

Started off Saturday at Matt’s birthday. It was a Karate Kid/Cobra Kai themed backyard party. I smashed my hand on a rock during beer pong. I thought I was going to make a comeback with a crane kick, but didn’t get a chance as Dave sunk his last two balls in my cup. Who am I supposed to be? Mr. Miyagi?

Then off to Mulholland’s in Williamsburg to watch the Gators take on Kentucky with some friends. I ordered the chili and waffle fries ($9). Pretty good bar food. It was sweet and I think I could taste cinnamon. Left after the Gators were on route to a 126-0 game after the 1st quarter. I hope I didn’t jink Tebow.

Headed off to Bushwick to play on top of Funkcamp. Pretty impressive setup for a rooftop. Tigers and Monkeys rocked Buick McKane. Brendan played with us and he shred. There was this band Wild Street. I first thought they were wearing wigs and dressing like this for the Glam Party, but I guess not. They had some catchy 80’s hair metal songs.

Bushwick Music Studios – Jerk Chicken

We played a show with our friend Rig 1 at Bushwick Music Studios down the street from us. They have live shows and I saw Junior grilling jerk chicken right outside once again. The last time at the McKibben Block Party, he ran out of the chicken when I got back. This time Junior gave me a breast and it was great. Nice burn on my lips and unlike most jerk chicken I’ve tried, it was flavorful throughout and not just on the skin. I mentioned this and he says it’s very common for Caribbean restaurants to not have as flavorful food because a lot of their chefs are vegetarian, so they wouldn’t really know how it taste. It’s best to eat food from someone that is making it for himself like he is with the jerk chicken. I’m not sure where all the chicken went because I don’t think anyone was eating. Maybe he was cooking two big trays of meat all for himself? By the way Junior’s secret is Walkerswood Jamaican Jerk Seasoning. He swears by it.

Dan brought some Hostess treats to the show -Twinkies, Zingers and Cupcakes. He noticed how much heavier the Zingers were compared to the Twinkies that were about the same size. There’s probably a lot more moistness in those Zingers.

Rig 1 was the lyrical master and this other band Count Numbers was amazing. They’re like a Mexican fiesta with a vibraphone mixed with Indie Shoegaze. Brilliant. I want to sign them.
