Corner Oyster House Bar & Grill

Woke up bright and early after a night of walking around Bourbon St. with Sam. Waitresses rubbing their boobies on us trying to sell shots and lots of dudes fighting in the street. Maybe it was good I didn’t bring my camera.

Rusty and I walked around the French Quarter at 9am looking for some breakfast and a beer. Barely anything opened. Just a street cleaning truck roaming by. Russ wanted to go to this place that he had grits and a beer one morning years ago. He didn’t know the name or where it was, but somehow we found it. I don’ t know how without an iPhone, but we did. It was Sergio’s Po-Boys & Deli, decorated with heavy LSU colors and a sign that said Bobby Flay lost a muffaletta throw-down there. It looked pretty awesome, but it was closed.

So we walked around Bourbon St. Probably not the best place looking for a divey breakfast spot, but that’s all we knew for out-of-towners. We found one spot open where we could get a beer. It was hot out and not much luck finding cheap grits. We gave up and went into the Corner Oyster Bar & Grill. Seems like a place where tourists and families would go …where I’d probably eat with my parents. Rusty’s breakfast kinda looked like shit. And I really wanted to eat some Jambalaya while was I down there, so I had to get it. For $10, it wasn’t bad for this type of restaurant. Probably what you would expect, but not what you’d expect for being in New Orleans. It looked like rice with tomato sauce poured on it. I guess this place isn’t bad for what it is. The bloody marys were fine. I can see why tourists and families go here, but it wasn’t what we were looking for.

We walked backed to the hotel, turned the corner and there it was. The type of hole-in-the-wall were were looking for –Johnny’s Po-Boys. Looked great and cheap. One of the employees was outside and saw our expression. He could tell that this was our kind of place. Fuck. I need to get an iPhone to tell me where to eat.

Hubig’s New Orleans Style Pies

We grabbed a few of these Hubig’s pies from the marina. A Hubig’s pie and coffee –true Lafitte Breakfast as Captain Mike says. They’re like Hostess Fruit Pies. Heavy sugar coating with sweet fruit filling. The banana pudding! Hu-Dat!

Jimmy Dean Sausage 16oz Roll

Randy Taylor did it! His love and determination for Jimmy Dean sausage got them to bring back the 16oz roll. We found them at a Louisiana Wal-Mart and cooked them up early morning before we headed out to sea. They were damn good. Tasted almost like McDonald’s sausage, but maybe a little more flavor.

Here on the pan is little more than half the roll. Yeah, there’s no way you’re going to feed 600lb+ men, a little Scotch women and a fat girl on a 12oz roll.

When we got back to New Yawk, I looked in the C-Town Freezer and they had some small pussy ass rolls of sage and maple. Randy Taylor did speak the truth.

Nathan’s Famous’ Hash Brown

Rusty, Sam and I hit LaGuardia to make our way down south to Louisiana. I picked up a hash brown at Nathan’s Famous –mostly because it was a lot less calories to their regular Egg Sandwich. How does a potato patty thrown in a deep fryer have less calories than a small scrambled egg on an English Muffin? It was around 150 vs 450. Yeah, probably not a time to think about calories when I’m about to food blog New Orleans. Dang.

Egg McBao

I used a Chinese steam bun to make myself an Egga Mega Muffin. It worked!

If you were wondering, I’ve been getting my steam buns from Double Crispy in Chinatown. Eight big plain buns in a bag for $2.50

Vegas Vacation: Saturday

We stayed in downtown Vegas at the Golden Nugget. It’s supposed to be old and seedy, but it’s pretty touristy now. At least you can easily hop casino to casino. Plus they had the Knight Rider Festival.

We went back to the Bay City Diner at the Golden Gate casino for country breakfast bowls. They were awesome, but I’m sorry to say I had to cash out soon after. Could have just been the jetlag.

Back to the Golden Nugget where they have a pool slide into the shark tank. That was pretty cool. I think that was my first pool slide eva.

We headed to the strip. Took the New York New York roller coaster. Ate at this awesome French steakhouse at the Paris Hotel & Casino that Greg suggested. Steak Frites are the bomb. Get the classique with hotel butter. It’s better than the filet mignon with crème fraiche.

Saw the Titanic theme song fountains at the Bellagio and ran to the MGM for the Crazy Horse topless review. We barely made it in. The girls were cute. There were a few numbers where you only see their lower half. I was just waiting for the dancer to peak over at the end and it would be a guy. Hiiiiiiiiiii! …No luck.

Then Ryan found the best slot machine. You keep putting dollars in and you keep winning –chips, candy and soda. It was crazy how lucky he was.

The Garden Party

The houseguest gang takes brunch at Garden Grill down the street. Rusty parties with the cardboard cut-out of the owner. Then over to Jody & Christa’s for a backyard Gator/Seminole football party, with food from the Garden down their street. Christa’s “Tasty Yetis” are really “cool” …Bailey’s, ice coffee, whip cream, and cinnamon. One of the guests brought a dog that Rusty and I actually know from a different circle of friends. It really is a small world.
