Rusty Makes a Turtle Burger

What happened over Labor Day Weekend… Rusty’s been obsessed with the Bacon Turtle Burger that’s been circulating the fishing and hunting forums. People were even thinking it was his when he reposted the images on his Facebook. It was being reposted over and over again, no one seemed to know who the Turtle Burger originally belonged to. I suppose that’s probably what happened with my BK Pizza Burger photos. After doing some research, I think the first person to blog it was INTERWEBS RANDOMNESS AND OTHER INSPIRING TALES. But even they claim the recipe and photos belong to someone else (MRD, the Marquis de Meat). Maybe we can just agree that the Turtle Burger really belongs to each and everyone one of us that dreams in our hearts and our stomachs.

Rusty opted to go for Turkey Bacon and Turkey Burger and no cheese. Sure, it doesn’t sound as awesome and greasy as the pork and bacon route, but he is kind of a redneck. He also likes his meats well done. It took lot longer to cook than the original recipe. More like 2 hours, rather than 30mins at 400 degrees. I don’t know if it’s our sucky oven or if turkey bacon just takes much longer to crisp up. I was surprised at how little grease was in the pan. The Turtle Burger was a little dry and overcooked for my tastes, but that’s Turkey Burger. Plus I can’t expect much when bacon, burger and hot dogs have different cooking times. It was pretty good in the end when I added bbq and hot sauce.

Russ and I were stuffed after splitting just one. He took the other Turtle Burger to Golden Star Corner bodega and had them put it on display. It weighed in at 1lb on the meat scale.

East Corner Wonton

Yasmin took me to East Corner Wonton …not for their wontons, but for their duck. Yeah, the wonton noodle soup wasn’t anything special. The duck, however, was awesome. It didn’t look fatty, but tasted like the fat flavor melted into the meat. Cheap too.

Peter’s Since 1969 Brunch

I was wondering why I’ve never seen this restaurant before if it’s been here since 1969. Apparently it hasn’t and just paying homage to the butcher shop that was there before. I walked by with some friends and stopped to stare at the customer’s food. The guy eating in the window went on and on about how good it was and to come for brunch for their pulled pork. That’s when I learned my friends ditched me.

Todd and I came for brunch. We split the Slow Cooked Pork over Old Fashioned Grits ($10.95) and Malawach Yemen Crispy Dough ($11.95). The food looks really good, probably much better than it tastes. It came with orange juice, coffee and a salad. A really good deal and a lot of food for the price. The food unfortunately just tastes okay.

Popeye’s Chicken Deal

I walked by Popeyes yesterday and it was packed. I figured everyone was there for the $1.89 two-piece chicken and a biscuit meal deal. Today, the same thing. Packed. Sam pointed out to me that it’s only a 10cent savings. I didn’t even notice it was originally $1.99 before. Did everyone else?

Sam is good at math.

Eden Restaurant’s $1.25 Pizza Slice

There’s cheap $1.25 pizza slices right off the Bedford stop. The signage throws me off though. Eden Restaurant? When the gates are closed and covering up the pizza sign, you’d swear there was a pizza shop right there last night. It wasn’t just a dream, was it?

The slice is what you’d expect for dollar pizza. Not bad, not great. Cheap, quick and fills you up.

Kate’s Joint

I had dinner at the popular vegetarian/vegan restaurant, Kate’s Joint with Laura and Bonnie. I never understood fake meat. For one –if I was veg because I was grossed out by eating a dead animal, why would I want to eat something that’s made to look and taste like it? Two –if it’s for health reasons, I’m not sure this fried, breaded, gravy smothered dish is exactly healthy for me. Yeah, I still don’t understand fake meat, but I still ate it all. They did a pretty good job at making it sorta taste like the said dead animal.

Milanes’ Oxtail Stew

I got hungry when I saw this Oxtail Stew on Serious Eats. But instead of getting the $11 one at Sophie’s, I went for the $8.50 one at Milanes. They gave me a full cup of pinto beans on the side. So smart when getting it to go –it doesn’t sog up everything on the walk back to the office. The Oxtail was tasty, but sometimes I wonder if Sophie’s green sauce is worth the extra $2.50. It probably is.

Honeychiles’ Cajun Food

After the Gainesville class photo, a few of us went to Honeychiles’ at the Charleston bar where they used to have free pizza. Now it’s Cajun food. Reggie Watts was dead on when he tweeted, “Quote of the day-”The pizza’s all gone and some punk rock guys opened a cajun restaurant”. Cajun food is popping up everywhere in Williamsburg (Tchoup Shop at d.b.a. and Goods Food truck). Cajun is the new Bedford.

Small Jambalaya ($5), Boiled Peanuts ($3) and Roast Poblano Pepper Corn Bread with bourbon honey ($3). I was disappointed to see that the Jambalaya was plain white rice topped with the jambalaya stew, rather than it cooked all together. It seemed more like a gumbo over rice than a jambalaya. Either way, it was meaty and fantastic. The boiled peanuts were great. Tasted like there was a bit of coffee grinds added to the boil. The corn bread was also good.

There was a couple next to us going to town with the Scallop (Seafood of the Day) Po’boy and a French Fries & Gravy Po’boy. I’m not sure that French Fry sandwich looked good, but it is definitely up my alley ($5).

All in all good food while watching the out of town bands loading in their huge vans and trailers’ worth of gear. I’ve never seen so much equipment in NY. No ones gonna be able to fit down there to watch them play with all them Marshall stacks.

Matt’s Bachelor Atlantic City Party

My burger buddy Matt is about to get married so party time in Atlantic City. It was the bro time of my life. Photos of the non-stupid stuff below. The German Sausage from 7-Eleven was probably the best thing I ate. They had some spicy Indian chili sauce on the toppings bar. It was surprisingly good, but I got my wiener too early. I didn’t know there was a boardwalk full of AC pizza and dog shops around the corner. There’s also a lot of Cash for Gold shops. I understand why people need the cash, but I want to know who goes there to buy the gold?

We stopped at this punching bag booth on our way to Hooters. There was a guy talking shit behind us. I wish I kept shooting when he tried to show off when we were done, but I didn’t want to give him the satisfaction. He took a swing and fell onto the clothing racks and then the ground. His girlfriend was laughing at him. Then he got back up and swung again and only got a 78. I blew it with my camera. It could have been the next Keyboard Cat viral. I still don’t know that is.

We took a gamble on the brunch buffet at Virginia City buffet in the Wild Wild West Casino. The only thing good about that place was the dining room looked like fake country houses. I couldn’t believe we were eating inside a mini house inside a casino building. It seemed so nice outside on the fake porch. Also there’s a coupon for $10 slot credit when you buy a buffet. It’s like trying to win your money back from the buffet you found out you didn’t want to eat. Matt was the big winner at $30 from the coupon credit. Fun times!

Johny’s Melissa Munchie Sandwich

I haven’t returned to Johny’s Luncheonette since I tried their disappointing Famous Sloppy Johny (grilled chicken, bacon, onions, cheese and coleslaw on a hero). Sounds amazing, but didn’t work for me. It says a lot when you put “Home of the Sloppy Johny” on your awning, so I didn’t expect much from anything else on the menu. I was dead wrong. The Melissa Munchie (Hot Roast Beef, Sautéed Mushrooms, Onion Rings, and Melted Mozzarella on Garlic Bread) is frickin’ awesome. They even threw in a few fries in there. All the ingredients work together and melds into one hell of a trucker-style sandwich.

I feel bad that I wrote off Johny’s after that first sandwich. Now I have to eat my words …and I’d be happy to.
