Mesa Coyoacan

I got my newest issue of Time Out and they have ceased to put Mesa Coyoacan in the “New & Approved” section after four or five issues in a row. I’m not sure if I’m the one to blame, but I’d like to think there’s power in food blogging. Now I’m not sure if I should feel good or bad if I did that, but it really was confusing. I kept thinking it was Groundhog’s Day, but that was Tuesday.

So here I am, finally dining at Mesa Coyoacan for brunch. Alyssa got the Chilaquiles with eggs. It was different than the kind at Grand Morelos, which I’m to understand is pretty authentic.  Mesa’s was much less mushy and wasn’t mashed up into the sauce. It was still a tortilla chip –a little soft from the ranchero sauce. It was closer to the kind I had in San Francisco. Bonnie’s Huevos Rancheros tasted like the Chilaquiles, since it was the same ingredients –just in a different form.

My Fish Tacos (tilapia) –three small two-bite sized tacos at $9. Pretty tasty with a squirt of lime. I’m usually in need of hot sauce on my tacos and they did bring out three homemade varieties. I tried all them, but it was best without. The tacos were plenty flavorful in each small bite.

Russ asked me what kind of place this is. I said you’d take your out-of-town guy friends to Grand Morelos. For Mesa Coyoacan, your out-of-town gal friends …or whoever you happen to wake up next to. It’s like the Sea or Planet Thai of Mexican restaurants.

Acapulco Deli & Restaurant

Jody and I were finally going to try the dusty buffet at the Chinese take-out restaurant next to his apartment. Every time we walk by, he steps in to look at the buffet. No plan to eat there, just to look. I’ve seen him do it at least four times. They have the usual Chinese American fare like chicken & broccoli, the big ticket money item is the sushi rolls and they have jello. It really doesn’t look good. But it was interesting to us like as if someone dared us to eat there …even though there was no dare. Unfortunately (or fortunately) they told us the buffet was closed, although there was some food left out. Jody took a good stroll along the buffet once more.

We ended up going down the street to Acapulco Deli & Restaurant. Our first time. It’s a diner style Mexican restaurant. There was a TV playing a romantic Latino drama about a luche libre wrestler. Jody got chicken tacos and I got the chorizo huraches. Pretty decent food. I’m just wondering what we missed at the dusty buffet.

Zaragoza Deli Tacos

Popped into this well-known (but at the same time obscure) dirty bodega for their popular tacos. Put in my order, grabbed a beer from the fridge and tried to squeeze in a seat on the few tables. The tacos were yummy at the going rate of $2.50 each. Lengua (tongue) was so tender. Best tongue I’ve ever had. Pork was marginally better. Bits of soft skin in there made it even more moist and flavorful.

They had Pepsi in 12-ounce glass bottles that looked like they have been recycled for decades. It’s not the new Pepsi Throwback I’m talking about, but real old bottles that’s scratched up and looks like it has peeled off sticker residue. I’m surprised someone is still bottling it this way.

The girl sitting behind me asked if I was Alaskan. I said I wasn’t and that was awkwardly the end of the conversation. I wonder if she thought I looked like an Eskimo or like Sarah Palin.

Dos Toros Taqueria

This new Mission-style burrito & taco place has only been open for two months and it’s one of the hottest places on Yelp. A lot of the reviews on there do make the comparison with the burritos from the West Coast. Just like if you open up any burger place in NYC, someone’s going to compare it to In-N-Out. Now I really don’t think San Fran Mission burritos are anything to brag about from my visit this past August. I’ve had Chipotle and I think that’s good.

Now does Dos Toros make a good burrito without the comparisons? I say yes. Although I’m now going to say it is comparable to Chipotle. Less slop of sour cream than you’d get from Chipotle and I think I got a heap more of the Carnitas/pork, which was really good.

The tiny place was full during last night’s freezing weather. Perhaps, the NYU students are back in town. I luckily found a seat by the time I got my food. High turnover I suppose. The staff was nice. Asked me how I liked the food.

Dos Toros practices sustainability (locally raised chicken fed without hormones or antibiotics, organic beans, and recycled materials for their furniture) …also comparable to what Chipotle tries to do. Alright, I say you know Chipotle taste good (if you’re not blinded by your biases). So Dos Toros is better if you like everything about Chipotle, but don’t want to support the big corporation. Plus Tecate is only $2.30. That’s amazing.

…Also if someone thinks they can’t find a good taco in NY like they have in LA, I think they only know about Chipotle or Taco Bell. Like my friend Zzlagern0n told me the other day, “New York be all like this and LA be all like that.”

Papacitos’ Chile Relleno Burrito

Eat this! A chile relleno stuffed in a burrito ($12) at the recently expanded Papacitos in Greenpoint. Dowse it with their homemade rojo or verde hot sauces, it’s frickin awesome.

Note that I had just come from a Chanukah party at Secret Project Robot. So maybe it was the Manischewitz talking, but I’m pretty sure that burrito was damn good. At the least, it is damn good drunk food. My favorite comment at the Chanukah party was some guy telling Bonnie, “I don’t know much about the Jewish religion. I just moved here from Pennsylvania.”

The newly expanded Papacitos is about four times bigger with a bar, three happy hours and karaoke on Thursday nights. It says on the $1 Taco Madness late night happy hour, they have the right to kick you out. I wonder if this was written before or after their owner/Chopped chef contestant got punched by a diner last week.

Little Mexico Tacos Cart at the Woods

On the way to pick up Brad’s car, we stopped over at the Woods to check it out. The bar has a taco cart in the backyard patio, similar to Union Pool and their El Diablo Tacos truck. I picked up a Carne Enchilada (spicy pork) taco for $2.50. Very spicy and the red sauce tasted a little cinnamon-y. Tasty at a nice price.
