I thought after weeks of ordering Time Warner, we’d have cable by the time of the USA vs England World Cup game. No dice, but we were able to get the game with over-the-air HD, as long as we had the mixing bowl behind the antenna, one piece of foil on a DVD beside it and made sure the front gate outside our building was closed. Afterwards, we grilled out back. We threw food to the neighbors on the roof, Ryan caught a rat on a fishing pole, Alistair made some killer aioli sauce that he topped onto the grilled vegetables, Sam brought some meat from the Meat Hook and Hinkle flew a plastic bag kite.
Rooftop birthday for Kate on Jenny and Brian’s rooftop. The most amazing piece of beef steak and ham steak I’ve ever seen –from the Meat Hook. Really impressive. I need to get me one of these. A couple of the butchers from the shop came later to the party. I’ve told them how I was intimidated to buy stuff there because all their meat look too good for me to touch. But they seem really nice and willing to to help people out with cooking tips. Maybe they should see how I cooked up these tofu dogs first.

I picked up this Cheese Babka ($4.50) from the Polish bakery across the street from Jody & Christa’s BBQ. I actually didn’t know what it was, other than it looked pretty awesome. I wish there was more cheese to bread ratio …like a McDonald’s cheese danish in it’s own styrofoam container. What happened to those?
Lesson learned this night that veggie dogs don’t do well on the grill. A lesson I revisited the next night when I was in charge of the grill. Christa made some nice sugar-rimmed Snoop Doggs (aka Gin & Juice). Bring on the Summer!
I’ve been planning on cooking up some mean steak with Matt this week, but I couldn’t wait any longer. Grabbed some nice one-inch bone-in ribeyes from Mario & Sons. Mario cut them himself and they were perfect. Put some olive oil, salt and pepper and threw them on the grill. Delicious. Only thing is that we tend to overcook our meat on the grill here, whereas I know Matt likes it on the bloody side. So that’s going to be a different experience. The other mistake on our grill is trying not to flip the steak onto the veggie patties. I think we need to buy tongs.

Bonus for grilling out back: You can get the party on the roof to throw you an empanada.
This party was bad ass. Lot of great spicy food. My favorite was the Jambalaya and Red Beans & Rice that Dan & Wesley (from Static Television) made with quality meats from the Meat Hook. I had the most delicious chunk of pork in the beans and rice. I’d buy all this regularly if it was sold around these parts.
David Jaffe from Garbage Gourmet, who blogs about food he finds in the trash outside of groceries and restaurants, brought some wild ramps he just picked from Winchester earlier that day. He actually sold some to Roberta’s before bringing them to the party. My first time eating a ramp. Pretty good. The end bulb is like an onion and the leaf is like spinach.
Mike brought his danger food, the stinky Durian fruit (see durian ice cream) …and an apology food, Chinese roast pork. I’ve been really wanting try a durian for a while now. But by the end of the night, I totally I forgot about it. Luckily I found the fruit cracked opened and hidden behind the bushes when I was wrapping up the extension cord. It was sweet and creamy and my finger stunk the rest of the night.
Brett easily won the Bhut Jolokia (Ghost Pepper/World’s Hottest Pepper) eating contest by putting down three. Adam and Aaron had one each and saw the holy ghost and perhaps suffered the consequences. I took the tiniest nibble (avoiding any seeds) and my mouth was on fire. That tiny bit was the hottest thing I’ve ever put in my mouth. How the hell did Brett eat three (almost four) without his face turning color. Brett is the devil.
I’m glad we brought the Lightning Reaction Shocking Game. Tested it the night before and it was the hardest I ever laughed and the most scared I’ve ever been since my food blog.
Amazing weather up here in NY finally. At the moment, we’re grilling up these little packets of vegetables my friends Ryan and Meghan showed me years ago. Just foil packets of mushrooms, peppers, onions, etc with salt, pepper, olive oil, balsamic vinegar and olive oil. Close them up and throw them on the grill alongside your meats. So easy for some steamed delicious veg.
Started off Saturday at Matt’s birthday. It was a Karate Kid/Cobra Kai themed backyard party. I smashed my hand on a rock during beer pong. I thought I was going to make a comeback with a crane kick, but didn’t get a chance as Dave sunk his last two balls in my cup. Who am I supposed to be? Mr. Miyagi?
Then off to Mulholland’s in Williamsburg to watch the Gators take on Kentucky with some friends. I ordered the chili and waffle fries ($9). Pretty good bar food. It was sweet and I think I could taste cinnamon. Left after the Gators were on route to a 126-0 game after the 1st quarter. I hope I didn’t jink Tebow.
Headed off to Bushwick to play on top of Funkcamp. Pretty impressive setup for a rooftop. Tigers and Monkeys rocked Buick McKane. Brendan played with us and he shred. There was this band Wild Street. I first thought they were wearing wigs and dressing like this for the Glam Party, but I guess not. They had some catchy 80′s hair metal songs.
