I’m happy to have Tio Wally (long-time Me So Hungry reader) aboard to send in his eating adventures from across America. Here he is in Barrow, Alaska.

There are a myriad of reasons I don’t turn over the helm of the sacred MSH land yacht to my evil twin Skippy. First and foremost is that he’s not a licensed pilot. Secondly, as the crack lead navigator of the SS Me So Hungry he has proven to possess the worst sense of direction since Douglas Corrigan.
We set sail from Wahoo, Nebraska en route to Surprise, Arizona and I became very ill.
I first thought I had a case of mogo on-the-go-go-go, the most dreaded of all diseases. But it could have been the flu or, perhaps, a case of crew-inflicted food poisoning; I don’t always trust Skippy. Long story short, I had to let Skippy captain the scow and now we’ve ended up here, at Pepe’s North of the Border.
Pepe’s North of the Border has the rare distinction of being the Mexican restaurant located furthest north of, well, anywhere. That’s why Skippy wanted to eat here. “We were nearby,†the ever-lost navigator said.
“Did you know that the owner of Pepe’s, Fran Tate, once appeared on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson?†he asked. “She presented the late night talk show icon with a gift Carson misidentified as a cane. Needless to say he was suitably surprised when he learned it was actually a ‘mummified’ narwhal penis. Oh, that Arctic humor.â€
So here we are. Parked in front. Unfortunately, Pepe’s is closed today. Hell, Pepe’s doesn’t even exist. On August 31, 2013 Pepe’s North of the Border burned to the ground.
It’s a sad thing. And it’s dark and somewhat chilly here today. And I’m hungry.
Skippy didn’t know this had happened, of course. But then, Skippy also didn’t know that Surprise, Arizona is southwest of Wahoo, Nebraska. There are many things Skippy doesn’t know, like how to read a map or a compass, nor does he possess the remotest semblance of an innate sense of direction. But he means well.
I still can’t fathom how Skippy could get this so wrong. Wahoo to Surprise is 1300 miles. Barrow is somewhat further — 2,895 BY AIR! And how the hell did he get the us through Customs? Twice!
This kind of oddness is not unheard of for Skippy. Disappointing? Yes. Unusual? No. But it’s all good. It’s Thanksgiving Day. We’ll get over it. And then we’ll sail back, laughing … eventually.
